Cimarron Model 1851 Navy Richards-Mason Conversion .38 Special with Original Box
Description: On July 2nd, 1872, Colt employee William Mason received a patent combining Charles B Richards’ ideas (which themselves were covered by an earlier patent) and his own for the conversion of Colt’s percussion revolvers to self-contained metallic-cartridge, breech loading pistols. Although left over parts from the percussion revolvers were used initially, eventually Colt began producing new six-guns from scratch rather than as conversions. As the far superior Colt Peacemaker was introduced only a year later (1873), production of the Richards-Mason conversions amounted to only 3,800 of the 1851 Navy Model and 2,100 of the 1860 Army Model. Nonetheless, the conversions and new production guns gave good service during the days of the Old West, being used by some of the more famous gunfighters of the old west. John H. “Doc” Holliday is supposed to have carried a newly made Richards-Mason 1851 Navy Model for a time. It is interesting to note that the Richards-Mason revolvers utilize the same ejector and ejector rod housing normally associated with the Peacemaker, but indeed, the basic design of this important component goes back to the original 1860 Richards Army conversions introduced in 1871. The Cimarron Arms example shown here, sports a 7.5” octagonal barrel, blued/color case-hardened finish, brass trigger guard and back strap, a smooth, one-piece walnut grip, and a brass bead front sight. The revolver is previously owned but has hardly been used. The left side of the barrel exhibits some form of wear in the finish, but this is only visible if the revolver is held up in the light at a specific angle. There is the slightest turn ring on the cylinder, and a little bit of wear on the ejector rod housing. Otherwise, the finish is in pristine condition. The bore is naturally in excellent condition. The Richards-Mason conversion comes with the original box.
