Here we present an antique “C.L. Dragoons” Civil War Colt 3rd Model Dragoon Confederate Issue Revolver, manufactured in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver was one of a very few that was made prior to the American Civil War and was taken through the Union’s blockade from North to South. These were financed by a well-to-do plantation owner (Elm Bluff) from Dallas County, Alabama, John J. Crocheron (1795-1864), and he might well have outfitted them in other ways such as horses and other gear. He was of French Huguenot lineage and was born in Richmondtown, Staten Island, New York. He moved to Alabama after the death of his father and established himself as a banker and merchant, even owning his own steamships. In any case, his patronage was enough to have this company of Light Dragoons named for him, which is better than simply being called Company I of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. The unit was mustered in Mobile on November 21, 1861 and would become Brigadier General Braxton Bragg’s escort in March of 1862. In addition to escort and scouting duties they also served as couriers and messengers. They would remain in this role under General Joseph Johnston as well as General John Bell Hood until they surrendered with Johnston at the end of April 1865. The Dragoons were initially led by Captain Robert W. Smith. When he was made Civil & Military Governor of Corinth, Captain Edwin M. Holloway took over, which led to another name for the unit: Holloway’s Company of Independent Alabama Cavalry.

A relatively limited number (around 100) of the Third Model Dragoons were made with 8” barrels. These had serial numbers in the 18000s and 19000s range, making this both a historical treasure as well as a rarity among the Dragoon variations.

Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War era Colt Dragoon!

The overall condition is very good. Gray patina. Faint but visible cylinder scene. The action is excellent. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The grip is solid. Numbers match.
