1860 mfg. Antique Pre-CIVIL WAR COLT M1855 ROOT Sidehammer POCKET Revolver
PERCUSSION .28 Caliber SELF DEFENSE Revolver
Description: 1860 mfg. Antique Pre-CIVIL WAR COLT M1855 ROOT Sidehammer POCKET Revolver PERCUSSION .28 Caliber SELF DEFENSE Revolver Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 “Root” Side-hammer Percussion Pocket Revolver, made just one year before the start of the Civil War in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut. Named after Colt’s factory superintendent Elisha K. Root, this revolver exemplifies Colt’s innovation, crucial to his success. Introduced six years after the Colt 1849 Pocket, the Root featured improvements like the “creeping” loading lever for easier loading, Colt’s first solid frame, a right-side hammer for cylinder access, and a cylinder axis pin that turned the cylinder. Although its small parts were fragile, these ideas influenced future designs, including the 1855 series of rifles and shotguns, and even experiments with the Root mechanism on a Dragoon pistol, a precursor to the 1860 Army. The first 25,000 Colt revolvers featured cylinder scenes that enhanced both their visual appeal and security against forgery. The Model 1855 Sidehammer displayed two different engravings based on barrel shape: round-cylinder models with octagon barrels showed the “Cabin and Indian” scene, depicting an Anglo settler defending against Indians, while round-cylinder, round-barrel Root revolvers featured a stagecoach holdup scene. This scene shows a coach under attack, with a woman in the doorway, the driver firing pistols, bandits wounded or fleeing, illustrating the revolver’s role in self-defense in 19th-century America. The overall condition is good. This example is refinished. The action functions, but the hammer cocks intermittently. Markings are legible. Numbers match. Solid grip with only average wear. A small chip is missing from the right and left heel. Much of the cylinder scene is discernable. The bore has dimmed and retains serviceable rifling. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/2 inches. Caliber: .28 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
