1864 mfr. NEW JERSEY Antique REMINGTON New Model Army .44 CIVIL WAR SCARCE; 1 of 1,000 Issued in 1864 to NJ Militia
Description: 1864 mfr. NEW JERSEY Antique REMINGTON New Model Army .44 CIVIL WAR SCARCE; 1 of 1,000 Issued in 1864 to NJ Militia Here we present an antique Remington New Model Army Revolver, issued to the New Jersey State Militia in 1864, during the American Civil War in Ilion, New York. Approximately 106,000 Remington New Model Army percussion revolvers were purchased by the U.S. government during the American Civil War. Approximately 80,000 of these were purchased during the last two years of the war, between 1863 and 1865. According to research published in “Remington Army & Navy Revolvers” 1861-1868 by Donald L. Ware, Remington revolvers through serial #149,000 were accepted prior to the end of the Civil War, with guns below serial #123,000 were accepted prior to the end of 1864. However, Remington did not sell their military revolvers just to the U.S. Government. In 1864, they accepted an order for 1,000 revolvers to be made on contract for the State of New Jersey, which was only a fraction of the entire production. New Jersey contributed greatly to the Union war effort, fielding over 88,000 troops, a significant portion of which was integrated into the Army of the Potomac. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. The Remington featured a strong, solid-frame design with the groove in the top for a rear sight, as opposed to Colt’s open-top design. Though Colt got the lion’s share of the government contracts, many consider the Remington New Model Army the superior firearm. This example features the “NJ” marking on the rear portion of the barrel. Small government inspector markings are found throughout. The barrel address reads “PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NY USA”. The overall condition is very good. Refinished. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The bore is very bright with sharp rifling. The grips are refinished and slightly undersized but serviceable. The numbers are mixed. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-7/8 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
