Allen & Thurber Pepperbox Pistol, Dealer Marked S. SUTHERLAND RICHMOND VA...Possible Confederate Use
Description: SOLD. This is an interesting little bar hammer double action revolver aka the "pepperbox pistol" which is built around 6 rotating .31 Caliber Barrels which are 4" in length. This one has a rare dealer marking, "S. Sutherland Richmond, VA". Samuel Sutherland was known as "The Armourer of the South" and was well-known for his imported shotguns before the Civil War. During the War, Sutherland repaired, altered sporting rifles to military configurations, converted flintlocks to percussion, and built older muskets into carbines, etc. in support of the Confederacy from his Richmond Armory. This particular Pepperbox was obviously imported by him during the 1840's or 1850's prior to the War but the fact that it was sent South gives it a good chance of having seen usage in Confederate hands during the Civil War as many of these weapons were carried by soldiers for personal protection and as a last line of defense in battle. We found a few photos online of Confederates and Union soldiers posing with similar pepperboxes. These are for refererence purposes only and sorry, we do not own them and they are not included in the sale of this pepperbox...but being over 100 years old, they are free for anyone to copy or download. Overall Condition is NRA Antique Good Plus with the metal having turned to a pleasing combination of dark pewter grey and brown patina. The barrel ribs are marked "S. SUTHERLAND RICHMOND VA" , "PATENTED 1837", "CAST STEEL", and "NORWICH C-T" . The left side of the bar hammer has a faint "ALLEN'S PATENT". Frame has some light foliate scrollwork engraving while the nipple shield has acid etched panels which are faded from use. Of the 4 screws that secure the shield, 3 are intact while one is missing. The mechanics work nicely. Bag-shaped 2 piece walnut grips are original and have what appear to be 2 small oval silver escutcheons. Nice example of one of America's earliest revolvers or "revolving pistols" with a desirble dealer marking from the South. Antique, Pre-1898, No FFL required. Sorry, no international sales or sales to NJ, NYC, Chicago, or HI. Buyer must be 21 years of age and a law-abiding citizen. 18.00 shipping. 3 Day Inspection.
