CIVIL WAR Era MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. Series III Percussion POCKET Revolver
ENGRAVED With Multi-Panel CYLINDER SCENE
Description: CIVIL WAR Era MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. Series III Percussion POCKET Revolver ENGRAVED With Multi-Panel CYLINDER SCENE Here we present an antique Manhattan Arms Third Series Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1861-64 in Newark, New Jersey. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. These revolvers greatly resemble the Colt Model 1849 Pocket and 1851 Navy revolvers. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired. Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types. This revolver is an early Series III when the company was, for a short time, equipping them with a thin plate behind the cylinder to prevent blowback from the exploding primer. This is a rare feature on this series as this product feature was dropped by the company for a time but then brought back on later series. This revolver has a fantastic multi-scene cylinder roll engraving with each scene framed within an oval with floral borders. Many times the borders will be the only thing remaining on the cylinder but not so with this one! The overall condition is very good+. The action is strong and crisp. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Still lots of visible cylinder scene—cylinder scenes are difficult to find preserved on these at all. The finish has matured to a smooth dark gray patina. A handsome revolver that compared well with the Colt 1851 Navy for the gunfighter or the armed citizen of the mid-19th Century! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1875 #20393 SOLD Antique: Yes |
