This is a 4th model Tranter Revolver like the ones imported for the Civil War. It is sometimes referred to as the model of 1856. The revolver is about 13” overall with a 6” barrel. The bore is around .44 caliber or a British 54 bore. The serial number “9771T” appears on the right side of the frame. The tranter patent mark appears on the left side of the frame. Additionally the initials “H.H.” are seen. This may be an inspector mark or maker mark. There are also British proofmarks on the cylinder. The revolver works in single action and double action. The bore shows clear rifling. The grips are very good with a little dent on one side. There is light scrolling on some metal parts. Overall the metal displays faded blue with some scattered rust. I believe the revolver is all original except for the screw that holds the cylinder pin in place. There are several examples of Tranter revolvers in the outstanding reference book, “The English Connection”. Tranter s/n 8763T was presented to StoneWall Jackson in 1863. Tranter 3rd model S/N# 7993T was presented to D.H. Maury of VA. He was chief of staff to Confederate General Earl Van Dorn. If you are looking for a good condition Tranter revolver for your collection, this will be an excellent addition.
