Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Naval Inspected U.S. Colt Model 1851 Navy Conversion Revolver, made five years prior to the start of the American Civil War in 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver was likely converted to .38 Centerfire sometime in the mid-1870s. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides. There were some military purchases and lots of private purchases by soldiers going off to war.
The bottom of the butt is marked “U.S.N. / J.L.H.” for James L. Henderson of the U.S. Navy, active in the Civil War. This is one of those that was in use during the American Civil War, actually owned by the US Navy, and was updated to .38 centerfire rather than being replaced by something completely new. These are quite scarce!

The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The Battle of Campeche cylinder scene is still clear. The action is excellent and crisp. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grip shows honest period use and remains solid. Part of the barrel wedge screw head chipped off long ago. The ejector rod tab is an old replacement. The inspector markings are clear. The numbers match on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. The number on the cylinder is 527 numbers away, which indicates that the cylinder was likely swapped during cleaning or armory refurbishment during the period of use.
