Manufactured in 1864 & Period Converted to .38 CF

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1851 Navy Conversion Revolver, made during the American Civil War in 1864 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver would have started out in the standard .36 caliber percussion format, and period and likely converted to .38 centerfire after the expiration of the Rollin-White patent. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides.

The Colt Navy was the first popular single-action revolver comfortable to carry on the belt. Before the Civil War, Missouri was rife with violence, and figures like Bill Anderson, Jesse and Frank James, and the Youngers gained experience with their six-guns, often carrying Dragoons on their saddle pommels and Navy revolvers on their hips.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong. If the action is worked slowly, the indexing can be intermittent. The bore is bright with strong rifling. This example has been refinished. Legible markings. “U.S.N.” stamped on the left frame and underside of the barrel. Numbers match. The loading lever is not numbered. Solid grip. Five uniform notches are present on the right grip. The cylinders appear to have never been fully bored out.
