Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Extremely Early Production Remington New Model Navy Single Action Percussion Revolver manufactured in the middle of the Civil war in 1863 in Ilion, New York. According to Flayderman, the serial numbers were a continuation from the “Old Model Navy”, who’s serial numbering ended somewhere around 23,000. The “New Model” Navy serial numbers began around 23,001. This example being serial numbered “23053 is quite early and quite rare, with the “New Model” being left off of the roll stamping on the barrel.

Remington manufactured approximately 28,000 of the .36 caliber New Model Navy revolvers between 1863 and 1875. About 4,300 of these revolvers were purchased by the U.S. Navy. This revolver lacks the anchor stamp found on some U.S. Navy Remington revolvers. There were three progressive models made by Remington. They were the Remington-Beals Army & Navy (1860–1862), the 1861 Army & Navy (1862–1863), and the New Model Army & Navy (1863–1875). The three models are nearly identical in size and appearance. Subtle but noticeable differences in hammers, loading levers, and cylinders help identify each model. The 1861 Remington actually transitioned into New Model appearance by late 1862, slowly transforming throughout 1862, due to continual improvement suggestions from the U. S. Ordnance Department.

This solid frame revolver came with a high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The hammer has a casehardened finish and the trigger is niter blue. The trigger guard is brass. The two-piece walnut grips are oil finished. The top of the octagon barrel is roll-stamped “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILLION, NEW YORK, U.S.A.” in two lines. Many of these were converted to a .38 caliber metallic cartridge before ever leaving the factory, as the Rollin-White patent was expiring.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish is present on the cylinder with a gray patina on the frame and barrel. Excellent action. The bore is bright and shiny with crisp rifling. Both grips are seated firmly and remain fine. Markings are clear and legible. Visible numbers match.
