Colt 1860 Army Revolver .44 Made in early 1863
Description: PENDING SALE. This is a good solid example of a Martially marked Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver that was made in the early part of 1863 and issued to Union forces at the height of the Civil War....most likely a cavalry unit. Standard .44 Caliber Percussion with 8 inch barrel and 6 shot rebated cylinder. Serial Number is in the 87,000 range with 100% all matching numbers including the cylinder and wedge (see photos). It certainly saw some action and it appears the soldier who carried this weapon lightly scratched his initials on the bottom of the grip "W.O." You can still see the parts of the US Inspectors' cartouches on both sides of the walnut grip. Various sub-inspector letters can be found on the barrel, cylinder, gripstraps, etc. The gun was used but fairly well looked after as the action is crisp, barrel is tight to the frame, at least half or more of the roll engraved cylinder scene is visible, and the back of the cylinder still has most of its original safety pins on the back of the lugs between the chambers. Most of the time, these are usually found completely worn off and then some. Barrel address is all there and complte, the screws are all in good working order and the grips are original to the gun with nice tight fit up to the metal and no cracks or repairs. The metal overall all has turned to a grey patina that is hazing over to a smooth light brown from age. Checked Frank Mallory's compilation of serial numbers he located in the National Archives (The 4 books are called Springfield Research) and the closest archived serial number to this revolver (87147) was number 87393 which was issued to Company I of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in May 1863. This unit spent most of 1863 fighting in Tennessee, fought in the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 and fought it's last major battle at Bentonville, NC...being present for the surrender of Johnston's (CSA) Army to Union forces under Sherman in 1865. That's not to say 87147 was there in this unit...we have no way of knowing if it went to the 10th Ohio or some other regiments and some companies within regiments kept good records while others little to none. It's just interesting to learn the history of a similar 1860 revolver from the same serial range. If only these could talk. Antique, Percussion, No FFL required under Federal Law. Please know your state and local laws before contacting us. $25.00 shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1860 Army Manufacture Date: 1863 |
