Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with Hartford Address and Scarce Iron Gripstraps
Description: Sold. This is a fairly rough but scarce example of the Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with the iron trigger guard and backstrap and desisrable Hartford Barrel Address. SN# is in the 205,000 range and was made in 1862. .31 Caliber, 6" Octagon Barrel with 5 shot cylinder. During the early part of the American Civil War, a small number of Colt Pockets were made up using iron gripstraps that were left overs from Samuel Colt's London Factory which closed in 1857. I've heard somewhere that these parts bounced around back and forth between London and Hartford for several years before eventually being utilized during wartime production when demand for Colt Pocket Revolvers was high. Most of 1860-64 production ended up in the hands of Union and Confederate soldiers who preferred them as personal carry weapons. That said, this one looks like it went through a war and then some. It has 5 visible matching numbers which include the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. There are only tiny fragments of numbers visible on the arbor pin and loading lever. The grips are from an original 1849 Pocket but have a different number Barrel wedge is a replacement. Overall, this Colt fits almost perfectly into the NRA Antique Definition of Fair Condition. It's been cleaned, worked on, has some replacement parts and some of the markings are only partially legible. What I will say is that someone in the past has put a lot of time and effort into getting it function as the mechanics are quite good and the bore is rather respectable as well with Good strong rifling throughout. Barrel to frame has a little bit of wiggle but it's not loose. The Hartford Barrel address is very weak and not all there. The barrel and parts of the frame were cleaned and had browning solution applied with some small spots of discoloration from where some pits were likely welded up...hence why these surfaces were smoothed out. The rest of the metal is more of a frosty deep grey/brown patina. The cylinder still has approximately 25% of its original roll-engraved Stagecoach Holdup scene. The walnut grips are solid with no chips, cracks, or repairs but do not fit the grip straps quite evenly...number inside the backstrap indicates they came off a different 1849 Pocket Revolver. This gun in my opinion would be perfect for display, a scarce edition for a new collector on a budget, or it would make an ideal candidate for a restoration project. Antique, No FFL required. No sales to NYC, NJ, DC, or Chicago. Sorry, no international sales. $20.00 shipping in lower US 48. Sold.
