Colt Model 1860 First Model Richards Conversion (Antique 1st Model .44 CF)
Description: This is a First Model Richards Conversion, an endeavor by Colt to get their Model 1860 revolvers to fire a cartridge without using the Rollin White patent, held by rival manufacturer Smith & Wesson. Production of these 1860's ran from 1871 to 1878 (to use up stocks of percussion parts), with serial numbers from 1 to 8700. These Richards-Mason conversion Colts were in the 5800-7900 range. Early Richards conversions, like this gun, have a square-ended ejector rod, while later models had a rounded end. This revolver’s barrel retains the "bullet cut" in the rammer channel, indicating that it was either assembled from percussion parts or converted from an original "cap and ball" revolver. Later new production conversions delete the bullet cut, and are known as "flat front" models in collector terminology. This example retains all of its original parts. No finish remains on the grips, but much of the original blue finish remains intact on the metal (but has started to patina to a brown/grey). This gun is mechanically sound with its hammer notches intact. Despite being almost 150 years old, the bore is surprisingly nice, with strong rifling and some expected frosting and pitting. Overall this is a nice example of a fairly scarce early Colt conversion. All items are also available for sale in our brick & mortar store and are subject to prior sale. Think long, think wrong. Payment On firearms, we typically only accept credit cards or money orders/cashier's checks.
