Colt Model 1862 Pocket Police Revolver with 6 1/2" Barrel, Civil War Production Made in 1863
Description: This Colt Model 1862 Pocket Police was the last style of percussion gun to be built by Colt. Serial Number is in the 25,000 range and was made towards the end of 1863. This could have been used in the latter half of the Civil War as Union Soldiers purchased these as personal weapons. The 1862 was essentially the same as the .31 cal. Colt Model 1849 pocket revolver. However, its frame was recessed and cylinder rebated to accomodate the Navy size .36 caliber ball...giving it a bit of extra firepower. Soldiers during the Civil War often purchased them privately as back-up weapons. Barrels in the Model 1862 were offered in 4-1/2", 5-1/2", and 6-1/2". This one has the desirable 6-1/2" Barrel, with five-shot cylinder, blued/cc'd finish, silver plated brass trigger guard/back strap, and walnut grips. Standard one-line New York barrel address. Left side of frame marked "COLT'S PATENT". Left side of trigger guard stamped "36 CAL". The cylinder also has a nice 1850 patent date inside one of the flutes. The numbers are matching on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, arbor pin, grips, and Wedge. So 100% matching. Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Fine Condition with 85% original case colors on the frame. Really nice! The hammer has 60% original case colors while the loading lever is around 50% colors. The cylinder is fantastic showing 70% original blue with all of the 5 safety pins on the back lugs between the nipples present...3 Very Good, 1 Fair, and 1 Poor. The barrel blue has flaked down to 10% with the balance a very pleasing smooth light grey and brown patina. Crisp New York Barrel Address. One would expect the barrel on a gun in such high condition to have a bit more blue remaining. The Colt Charcoal blue process was beautiful but not very durable and if the factory polished the barrel too brightly, it could flake off...especially if the barrel became heated from firing and expanded. You see this a lot on Smith and Wesson revolvers where the frame and cylinders will have most of the blue but the barrels flaked! The brass gripstraps retain 5% original silver which is typical of 1860's era Colts..the plating was very thin and easily wore off. The original walnut grips are a beautiful reddish orange with 95% original varnish remaining. The left and right profiles are nearly flawless while the butt shows some dings in the wood and the brass from being used to hammer tacks. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The screws are all good, none boogered, and few have some of their original fire blue remaining. Very Good Mechanics. Wedge is tight and barrel has no play against the frame. Hammer works on both full and half cock notches. The bore is bright and shiny with strong lands and grooves...Excellent which is impressive for a black powder era percussion Colt that's 160 years old. Antique, Pre-1898. No FFL required in accordance to Federal Law however some state and local laws may vary. Buyer must be 21 years old. No sales to NJ, NYC, DC, Chicago, HI. Sorry, No international sales. 25.00 shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1862 |
