Here we present a Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 caliber percussion revolver, 6-shot cylinder, blued and case hardened finish, 7.5" octagon barrel, walnut grips, brass trigger guard and back strap. Per Springfield Research Service, serial number 108940 was issued to Company A, 3rd NY Cavalry. With that info, we went into the National Archives and discovered this revolver was issued to Henry (Hervey) H Smith, who enlisted in Rochester, NY in June 1861 and mustered into the regiment in July 1861, serving the entire Civil War and mustering out in July 1865. I posted a couple pictures of him and his history; I have a binder full of information including muster records, medical records, pension records and unit history, too many pages (over 60 in all) to include in a 20-picture listing. Of note is the page showing this revolver issued to him, as well as his Sharps and Hankins carbine #1773, which is confirmed in the Sharps Civil War Carbines and Rifles book by McAulay and Coates. All provenance will be given to the buyer.

CONDITION: Except for the wedge, which is a different number, the correct serial number appears in part or in full on the cylinder, barrel, frame, trigger, guard, loading lever, arbor and grip strap (number on grip strap restamped over the old number which had worn away). There is no bluing or case colors remaining except traces in the protected areas. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks and normal expected wear. Action functions crisply going to half cock and full cock but is a little weak coming forward to fire. Bore is a 5 of 10, having softened rifling with some wear and black powder pitting. Loading lever is a little loose with some side-to-side wobble. Cylinder retains no original scene, with just the serial number remaining. All nipples are original and the cylinder stop pins are for the most part worn away. This one certainly saw long use in a holster and in battle, and will make a good addition to your Civil War revolver collection due to its provenance. Identifed 1851 Navys are much harder to locate than the 1860 Army revolver, so don't miss out on this one!!
