Rare Civil War US Navy-Inspected Savage Self-Cocking 1861 Navy Revolver
Description: SN 2086, .36 Caliber, 7" octagon barrel with a fair, lightly pitted bore. This is a "P / J.R.G." (Capt. John R. Goldsborough, USN) inspected revolver that has an overall mottled plum-brown and gray patina with areas of mild pinprick pitting scattered about the metal. The action is functional, however the hammer will not cock with the lever and the cylinder advance only works when the hammer is at half-cock. The walnut grips are in good shape, with minor handling marks and blemishes on both panels, and there are no visible cartouches. These cumbersome revolvers used a complicated two-trigger action that required the user to pull the lower ring trigger to both rotate the cylinder and cock the hammer, while the upper trigger fired the gun. Despite their drawbacks, the US Government contracted for 11,984 of them, with only 800 of those accepted by the US Navy. This is one of those "Navy & Navy" revolvers, and is in good-near very good condition overall. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
