SANDWICH ISLANDS COLT 1849 Charles Marshall PERSEUS
Description: SANDWICH ISLANDS COLT 1849 Charles Marshall PERSEUS Provenance from Ship Charles H. Marshall Here we present an Inscribed Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver, manufactured circa 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw a lot of use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time and the revolver that firmly established Colt’s company in the mid-19th Century. This 1849 Pocket piece features an inscription on the backstrap: “CHARLES MARSHALL/MASTER SHIP PERSEUS/SANDWICH ISLANDS/1859/AD”. According to the Library of Congress, Charles H. Marshall (1792-1865) was the founder of the Black Ball Line, a fleet of packet ships running between Liverpool and New York. His nephew, Charles A. Marshall, was a Black Ball Line sea captain who piloted a ship named after his uncle. It seems that this revolver was inscribed to commemorate a certain voyage in 1859 to the Sandwich Islands, though the significance of the event remains a mystery yet to be uncovered. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The grips are worn but in good shape. The bore is well-rifled and dark. The action on this revolver is strong. There is one chamber on which the cylinder needs some help to revolve. Here is a wonderful relic with and inscription regarding the Sandwich Islands! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4 inches. Caliber: .31 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $3200 #7224 SOLD Antique: Yes |
