Scarce Manhattan Fire Arms Co. Series I .31 Caliber Pocket Model Revolver & Holster
Description: Offered here is a very nice looking Series I Manhattan .31 caliber Pocket Model revolver and holster. With the Colt revolver patents expiring in 1857, Manhattan capitalized on making firearms that closely resembled the Colt revolvers for public appeal, but incorporated a few of their own patented features. Somewhat unusual for a mass produced repeating handgun, the Manhattan Pocket Model revolvers also exhibit hand engraved scroll work on the frames. Only about 1000 of these Series I revolvers were produced between 1858 and 1860, so they were definitely around to see use during the Civil War. Whle it appears that the company never sought, or at least obtained, any large government contracts for their revolvers, many Manhattan revolvers were privately purchased by officers and soldiers for their personal use. The Series I revolver has a 5-shot cylinder with 10 cylinder stop slots. The cylinder has a stage coach hold-up scene roll stamped into it. The top of the barrel is stamped with a two line maker address. The scrollwork, barrel address, and cylinder scene are quite visible. it has all matching serial numbers of 925 stamped on the bottom of the barrel, wedge, back of the cylinder, and on the frame under the grips. The action works, but is somewhat loose and sloppy, needing some attention. if you hold the gun with the barrel pointing up in the air, the cylinder advances properly, but when pointing the gun horizontally, it is inconsistent, sometimes it advances fully, other times partially or not all. The hammer holds well at half and full cock, and snaps forward when the trigger is pulled. The bore does have light pitting, but also shows strong rifling. Most of the original varnish remains on the wood grips. The revolver is accompanied by a period flap style holster, which fits like a glove. The holster is strong and pliable with strong stitching, no holes, and the large single belt loop remains on the back. Interesting enough for a revolver from a company named Manhattan, the revolver has a Civil War era New York militia cuff button as a stud for closing the flap.
