U.S. Civil War Savage Revolving Firearms Co. Navy Model Revolver in .36 Caliber Cap & Ball
** All-Original Early-Production Example **
Description: This is a very nice, honest, and all-original Savage Navy Model revolver made during the first year or two of production that almost certainly saw action in the American Civil War. This very interesting and unique Savage Navy Model was essentially an improved version of the Savage & North "Figure-8" revolver from the late 1850's. This example is serial number 422, and it is all-matching and has not been modified or "improved" in any way since leaving the factory. This Savage Navy Model is complete and 75% functional, as the "two-step double-action" design will often jump "out of time", and the hammer will sometimes fall when the ring lever is released forward quickly rather than staying cocked-back. When cocked manually without using the ring action lever at all, the hammer stays cocked and the trigger functions as it was intended (although a very light pull). As this is definitely NOT a pistol that should ever be fired, this can be left as-is or fixed by a competent gunsmith by the next owner if he or she so-chooses. As it sits, it is a very handsome piece, with a uniform and honest aged-patina that gives the gun an issued and battle-used look. This Savage definitely did not spend the Civil War in an officer's desk drawer! It has never been excessively cleaned or refinished in any way and would display very nicely as it currently sits. The Savage address and patent dates on top of the barrel are still 100% legible, and the grips appear to be all-original. The grips show a lot of wear consistent with the pistol, particularly the right grip panel which has multiple cracks that have been repaired a long time ago. All of the factory serial-numbered parts are matching except for one, the side plate on the left side is numbered "282". This side plate while not original to the gun, is definitely a factory-made piece that has been on this Savage a LONG time. The still-visible factory serial-numbered parts that are matching are the barrel, cylinder, and frame, all numbered "422". I could not find a serial number (or even trace of one) on the cylinder pin/loading ram assembly, either grip, or the rear section of the cylinder. There are small uppercase factory inspection letters stamped on various parts. All in all, this Savage Navy Model revolver is a very neat piece of U.S. Military and American Civil War history that has no doubt witnessed some very important moments in time. If you have been looking for one of these scarce Civil War Savage Navy Model Revolvers that is both affordable and very displayable, this is it!
