Lettered Colt 1860 Fully Fluted Army shipped May 1861 to Maj. William Thornton at New York Arsenal
Description: VG+ Model 1860 Army with fully fluted cylinder and 8" barrel, accompanied by Colt Archive letter confirming shipment in May 1861, in a lot of 500, to then Major, later Brevet Brigadier General William A. Thornton. Thornton was an 1825 West Point graduate (classmate of Major Robert Anderson of Fort Sumter fame) who served lifelong in the U.S. Army (41 years), as Captain of Ordnance in 1838 and during the Civil War as commander of Watervliet Arsenal and then New York Arsenal up to his death there in 1866. He was chief inspector for Colt Military Arms in Springfield beginning with the Paterson revolver through the Dragoon series. I have included some of his history and a portion of the Colt letter in attached photos. THE GUN: Serial #5509, all matching with no number on the wedge. Barrel and cylinder markings are clear and crisp, and frame markings are clear but light. There are no cartouches and no inspector markings. Action is excellent and tight. Barrel is in VG condition. It has a smooth, dark patina finish, probably helped with a bit of brown long ago. The gun has never been buffed or cleaned. There are some very light scattered patches of freckles. Grips are original wood and in VG condition. This is a much better than average Fluted Army, with great Colt provenance showing service very early in the War just after Sumter. On a side note, during the War Col. Sam Colt presented then Col. Thornton with a beautiful personally engraved double-cased set of an 1860 Army and 1861 Navy which sold at for $224,250.00 in 2014! Also, I am a collector and not a dealer. I have owned this gun for 15 years. Thanks for looking. SOLD Antique: Yes |
