SCARCE NAVY-MARKED COLT MODEL 1860 FLUTED ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER W/COLT LETTER
Description: SCARCE NAVY MARKED COLT MODEL 1860 FLUTED ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER with Colt Factory letter dated December 10, 1976. Serial number 5091 was one of only a very few Army revolvers to go to the U. S. Navy for the Civil War, was 1 of 50 guns shipped on May 9, 1861 to the U. S. Navy Yard in New York, NY, and bears the USN stamp on the bottom of the butt strap as well as the I/FAR inspector stamp of Lieutenant Francis A. Roe, the ordnance officer and inspector, on the bottom of the left grip. This revolver is caliber 44 of course and has the typical 4 screw frame, 8" round barrel, walnut grips, and ratchet-style lever as well as the blued finish and brass trigger guard. Only about 4,000 fluted cylinder 1860 Army revolvers were produced, and typically the few survivors are tightly tucked away in private collections, which is where this one came from recently. A similar revolver was sold at by James Julia in March of 2009 and went for $5,175 even though it had been nickeled and cleaned, and had a mismatched wedge! This one is all original (wedge is not numbered) and has not been altered in any way. Most likely this specimen spent time on a Union vessel used to chase the Confederate and Foreign blockade runners along the East Coast during the Civil War. CONDITION: All metal surfaces are void of their original finishes except the barrel, which has some plum remaining on both sides in the areas around the wedge, with the barrel and frame turned gray/patina mix, with some staining, and the back strap/butt turned dark gray. The original walnut grips have darkened with age but still fairly even with the metal in all locations and show expected nicks and dings from use. Brass trigger guard shows multiple nicks behind the trigger loop and is fairly bright; has a sub-inspector "L" on the left side rear by the grip. Serial number matches on butt, trigger guard, frame, barrel, cylinder pin, and back of cylinder - another rare feature of this revolver - there is no patent marking or serial number in the flutes, features that Charles Pate mentions in his fine book about the 1860 Army as 100% correct (page 330). The "COLTS PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame is only partially visible due to pitting and wear. Barrel address is slightly worn but complete and fully legible. Muzzle shows holster wear. Bore is good with strong rifling but also typical black powder oxidation. Cylinder has all 6 original nipples intact, and they are undamaged. Scattered surface pitting due to the salty ocean air is found in a few spots on all metal pieces. Correct brass front sight remains intact, uncleaned, and has never been filed down or altered. Cylinder at rest has slight side-to-side play but does index spot-on each time the hammer is cocked. Grades NRA Antique Good and this is a must-have for the Colt / Civil War enthusiast. Colt factory letter will be included to the purchaser. More pictures available on request as I could only fit 20 in the listing. TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to you assuming your local laws allow it. 3-day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping. Payment by bank check, money order or personal check. All major credit cards accepted with 4% convenience fee added. Sold as a collectible only and should be checked by a competent gunsmith if you intend to shoot it. Trades and offers considered.
