Early Colt Model 1889 Double Action Revolver with Rare Upside Down Barrel Address, Antique Pre-1898
Description: This is a collector grade Colt Model 1889 Double Action Revolver with a rare upside down barrel address. The 1889 is the Great Grandfather to all modern-day DA Revolvers with the swing-out cylinders. The first year of production consisted of 5000 Model 1889's that went to the United States Navy. After Serial Number 5000, the 1889 became available on the Commercial Market. This one is in the 9500 range and was made in 1890 which was 2nd year production. At this point in time, almost all of the 1889's were being produced with 6" barrels...the Navy contract had them and so did the majority of Commercial models so when the shorter 4 1/2" barrel was introduced, the Colt Factory found itself in a predicament. The roll stamp for the barrel address did not fit between the front sight and the frame....it was too long and the roll die for the short two line address they later used on all short barrel 1889's was not ready. With orders coming in, Colt had to improvise so they simply turned the barrel on its side and rolled the address down the right side of the barrel UPSIDE DOWN! This was seems to have been done for just a short time in 1890 and this is the 3rd one we've had in 25 years of buying and selling Colt DA's. This is by far the best example of this rare variant that we've encountered. It deserves a special spot in someone's Colt collection. Overall, it's in NRA Excellent Condition with 97% original blue on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. The gripstraps have mostly flaked to grey/brown patina...probably from an owner with acidic hands. The checkered hard rubber grips are perfect and all of the assembly numbers on the gun are 100% matching...grips, frame, cylinder yoke, cylinder, latch, and barrel. The trigger, screws, and rear profile of the hammer still exhibit most of their original bright nitre blue. Upside down barrel address has just the early 1884 and 1888 patent dates. Nice mechanics and a strong bore. These do not come around very often and to date, this is by far the best one we've seen. Antique, Pre-1898 Production. No FFL required under Federal Law. Some state and local laws may vary. Please know yours before contacting us. Buyer must be 21 years old and a law abiding citizen. Sorry, No International Sales unless you go through a Licensed Exporter. We do not ship directly to overseas. $25.00 shipping in the Lower US 48.
