Martial Marked Colt 1860 Army
Description: I'd like to sell my Marshal Marked, four screw, Colt 1860 Army, ser# 35595. The ser# indicates a mfg date of 1862, a Civil War gun. The blue is all gone leaving it pretty much in the white. All the numbers match including the last four on the wedge, cylinder, and cylinder base pin. I believe all major components are original to the gun, including the "L" marked grips. All bets are off on small parts, like screws, although, for when not using a stock, the smaller headed fourth screws seem correct. (photo) Left frame is marked COLTS PATENT in two lines. (Photo) Left rear side of trigger guard is marked 44CAL stamped in the brass. (photo) In the brass behind the trigger guard, in the curve to the front grip strap, is marked with what appears to be a number, possibly 92. The 2 is discernable but the other "number" is distorted due to the curvature of the stamped area. (Photo) The left side of the barrel at the extreme rear, behind the wedge is stamped with a "C". (Photo) Inside of the steel back strap, under the grips, is also marked with a "C". (Photo) At the rear of the cylinder, on the non-rebated area between the cylinder stops, is a horrizontally placed "M". That is, an "M" lying down. I understand that to be a proof mark, not an inspector's stamp. There is another "M" placed similarly at the right rear side of the barrel. (Photo) At the rear edge of the rebated part of the cylinder, opposite of, and inline with, the horrizontal "M" is an upright "L". (Photo) The battle scene on the cylinder is very weak. (Photo) The clylinder locks and lead-ins are not excessively worn. The cylinder locks up and lines up ok. The bottom right side of the grip is stamped with an "L". It is hard to discern among some dents in the wood but with magnification it is plain to see. Dents in the wood do not affect it. (Photo) There is an "O" stamped on the butt, under the ser#.(Photos) Inside the frame, beside the stock cut out in the right recoil shield, is a stamped letter "P". (No Photo) The bottom of the barrel, just ahead of the recess for the rammer cogs, is marked with a "D". (Photo) On the top of the back strap under the hammer is a partially obliterated stamping that I can't make out even under a microscope. ( No Photo) The address line is a New York address. The length from the start of one hyphen to the end of the other is100.5mm, as best I can measure. (Photo) Under the wood grip on the left side of the front strap near the butt are two stamps, one a "G" and the other a "6" or a "9" depending on which way one looks at it. (Photo) I'd say, looking at this gun under a microscope, it has been rubbed with a very fine abrasive cloth. This is too light to be noticeable with the naked eye. There it is. I've tried to be thorough with my description. Being over 150 years old, I have to sell it as is with no guarantees. Although I have fired this revolver to check its functionality, I'm not selling it, or recommending it, as a shooter. I think it is a good, representative piece of Civil War history. It shot well, by the way. Trigger is pretty lite, undoubtedly some wear. No misfires. I used 30gr of 3F and #11 caps, which were a little loose on the nipples. Free shipping and insurance to your door. There's a three day inspection period, no shooting. Keep it and shipping and insurance are free. Return it with no questions asked, and buyer pays shipping and insurance both ways, plus the listing fee. This only affects those with buyer's remorse. SOLD Antique: Yes |
