Colt New Service .38 WCF 4.5” Blued
Description: Back in the day, the Colt New Service revolver was a very popular firearm and versions even saw use with the U.S. before and during World War One as the M1909 and M1917 revolvers. The New Service used the largest revolver frame built up to that time and continued to be the largest frame revolver until the Colt Anaconda arrived in 1990. The New Service, like the famous Colt Peacemaker, was offered in a variety of calibers including .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .38-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .44-40, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .450 Eley, .455 Eley (aka .455 Webley), and .476 Eley. It was offered in a variety of barrel lengths ranging from 2 inches to 7.5 inches. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, this New Service is a Model 1917 Civilian/Commercial Parts Model. Around 1,000 of these revolvers were built post-WWI using many left-over components from M1917 revolver production. These revolvers were built with 4.5” or 5.5” barrels and have either hard rubber or checkered walnut grips. Serial number range ran approximately from 336,450 to 337,500. This example left the Colt factory in 1933 is chambered in the Old-West favorite, the .38-40 Winchester made famous in those days alongside the .44-40 and .45 Colt by the Colt Peacemaker revolver. The .38-40 is one of the few successful bottleneck cartridges. Contrary to its number designation, the .38-40 is actually a .40-caliber cartridge, using a 180gr lead bullet of roughly .401-inch diameter. The frame has a few scratches on it all of which have probably come from some use over the years. Much of the bluing is still in good condition. The barrel is 4.5 inches in length and is the heavy, “stove-pipe” type. The bluing has a different luster than the frame. Colt markings are clear and crisp. The grips are the hard rubber type. A lanyard swivel is present on the bottom of the grip. The bore is in excellent shape. There are two small spots near the muzzle which could possibly be micro-pitting, but this would have no effect on accuracy given the otherwise superb condition of the bore. This New Service would make an excellent shooter. SOLD Manufacturer: Colt's PT. F.A. Mfg. Co.
