A Frielich 1952 Nickel Colt "Python" Official Police .38 Special
Description: Frielich Half-Fitz Pre Colt Python Design Robert Frielich - "The Wizard", was a respected and well known N.Y. City Cop Shop gunsmith, operating from his gun store in Manhattan, adjacent to the NYPD 13th precinct. His specialty was custom combat duty guns as well as target handguns from the 1940s through the 1970s. Known for his tuning and custom revolver work for N.Y. City Cops and friends, Frielich was a Master pistol and revolver smith, earning him the nickname "The Wizard". In the early 1950s, Frielich started work on a design for the ultimate target revolver, this is one of the pieces he built as a pre-Python design. Beginning with a 1952 Colt Official Police in .38 Special, Frielich built this piece with a light target trigger, cut-away half of the trigger guard, making it a half-Fitz design, built a 5" match target bull barrel and counter weighted for balance with a leaded grip, which was also rounded and added a rail rib platform for the sights. Frielich's stamps are shown on the barrel and frame, and the piece retains its original nickel finish with gold and fire-blue Cabochon accents. The Mid-century nickel remains excellent, a small flake missing at the muzzle. The bore and cylinders are clean and bright, and the cylinder shows a faint turn-line. The rust blue on the rib has begun to fade, though the Cabochon fire blue screws remain bright. The hammer's gold plate has minor surface oxidation along the top serrations.
