The Colt Police Positive was manufactured for those its name suggests - the fine officers putting their lives on the line every day all day in the early 1900s to protect the lives and property of the citizens around them. The Police Positive was designed to be a light, easily carried revolver for persons who would potentially walk during their shift rather than using a car. Imagine having to carry an S&W N frame or Colt New Service all day on your hip without the benefit of having a horse, bike, or automobile. The Police Positive was built on the Colt D frame, which came with certain advantages. For roughly the same size and weight, the Colt D frame revolver has 6 shots of .38 versus the Smith’s 5 shot I and J frames. This was true for D frame revolvers chambered in .38 S&W and those chambered for the .38 Special. Colt was always more than willing to play up this fact in its advertisements. The Police Positive was very popular among police departments, alongside its larger counterparts such as the Colt Official Police, New Service, Smith and Wesson Hand Ejector Model 1905 (later the Model 10) and Hand Ejectors .38/44 and .44. The revolver is in fair to good condition. Like a true Colt, it locks up as tight as a bank vault. The bore is in fair condition and has a small amount of pitting in the bore. Having had personal with Police Positive in .32 Long with a slightly pitted bore, I can say with some certainty that this revolver should still be a fairly accurate shooter. The revolver has been re-blued. During the process the hammer and trigger were also re-blued rather than leave them “in the white” as Colt would have done. More importantly, the serial number seems to have been partly wiped away for unknown reasons. Two digits remain, leaving the revolver with the serial number 18. Assuming the full original serial number to be 18000 or greater, the revolver would have been produced in 1908 or later. Although the pony is visibly worn, the markings on the barrel are still very clear and exhibit far less polishing. The left grip is of course chipped.
