Colt Police Positive Special 1st Issue 32-20 Winchester 6”
Description: The Colt Police Positive Special was manufactured for those its name suggests – the fine officers putting their lives on the line every day all day in the early 1900s to protect the lives and property of the citizens around them. The Police Positive Special was designed to be a more powerful version of the original Police Positive, itself designed to be a light, easily carried revolver for persons who would potentially walk during their shift rather than using a car. Imagine having to carry an S&W N frame or Colt New Service all day on your hip without the benefit of having a horse, bike, or automobile. The Police Positive Special was built on a slightly lengthened Colt D frame to allow for chambering the more powerful .38 Special and .32-20 Winchester cartridges. The D frame’s design came with certain advantages. For roughly the same size and weight, the Colt D frame revolver has 6 shots of .38 versus the Smith’s 5 shot I and J frames. This was true for D frame revolvers chambered in .38 S&W and those chambered for the .38 Special. Colt was always more than willing to play up this fact in its advertisements. The Police Positive was very popular among police departments, alongside its larger counterparts such as the Colt Official Police, New Service, Smith and Wesson Hand Ejector Model 1905 (later the Model 10) and Hand Ejectors .38/44 and .44. The revolver is chambered in the .32-20 Winchester cartridge and is in fair to good condition. According to the serial number and the Colt Database, the Police Positive Special was produced in 1923. Like a true Colt, it locks up as tight as a bank vault. The bore is in surprisingly good condition given its age and caliber and has a bright shine to it when light is shone down the bore. There are only two spots of pitting, both minor. The finish has turned to a patina for the most part. The front sight has been cut down, which is not an unusual modification for older, fixed-sights revolvers. The ejector rod cap is likely a replacement given the difference in finish. It does appear to be the correct model of part, however. The grips of course are slightly chipped. This is due in part to the level of knowledge of rubber manufacture around the turn of the century. The grips turn rock-hard over time and eventually crack. My personal Police Positive has similar wear to its grips. Look-alike replacements are readily available today and these are much more durable. The Colt markings are still in good condition and are legible. In my personal experience with Police Positives, I have found them to be excellent shooters, and they are comfortable to shoot even with the small size of the grips. Recoil for the .32-20 is usually light. Care should be taken though. Most ammo manufacturers load the .32-20 for use in rifles, not in older revolvers. Given the 32-20s increasing popularity in cowboy action shooting, there will be some suitable ammo out there. The Positive deserves far more attention than it receives. SOLD Manufacturer: Colt's PT.
