Rare Browning Bros Utah Shipped 1873 Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver .44-40 Nickel 1897 Carved Steer Head Pearl Slim Jim Holster
Description: Desirable Documented Browning Brothers Company Shipped Model 1873 Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver, Nickel Plated with Carved Steer Head Pearl Grips & R.T. Frazier Slim Jim Holster, .44-40 WCF, mfg. 1897 with 7 ½" barrel. This is a beautiful Western shipped cowboy Colt originally delivered to the famous Browning Brothers Company in Utah. John Moses Browning was of course the genius firearms designer responsible for the lever action Winchester rifle Models of 1886, 1892, 1894, and 1895, the Model 1887 lever action and 1897 pump shotguns, the single shot Model 1885, the Browning Auto-5 semi-auto shotgun, and the Model 1918 B.A.R. among many others. Browning's father opened the gun shop in Ogden, Utah in 1852 which John and his brothers took over in 1878. The included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .44-40, 7 ½" barrel, nickel finish, rubber grips, shipped to Browning Brothers Company locations in Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah, November 18th 1897. Overall the gun retains about 20% original nickel finish which is mostly confined the gripstraps, hammer, and rear of the frame. The balance of the gun is worn to a smooth silver/gray patina with clear markings and nice edges. Beautiful period retailer carved steer head pearl grips fit excellent overall and feel wonderful in hand. They have vibrant color with a classic Western steer head relief carved on the right side. Carved ivories are rare but carved pearl is even harder to find. There is an old surface chip behind the screw on the left side with some small surface chipping on the upper right side (the black spot is just grunge within a surface ship, it is not open to the inside). Clear original Colt address, Colt Frontier Six Shooter marking, patent dates, rampant horse logo, and matching serial number “171858” stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap. Original hammer, trigger, loading gate, cylinder pin, screws, ejector rod with brass spring, and blade front sight. The action is very smooth and crisp and functions perfectly with five clicks. Cylinder locks up on time with moderate/considerable play overall. Bright bore shows fair rifling worn just at the muzzle with moderate blackpowder frosting throughout. Included is a rare R.T. Frazier, Pueblo, Colorado slim jim holster which fits the gun perfect. The leather is supple and shows light/moderate wear overall with no rips and has an attractive plum/brown color with good markings. A classic Wild West cowboy Colt with great eye appeal shipped to one of the most highly sought after Western retailers.
