Introduced in 1953, the Colt Trooper was designed as a premium service revolver that bridged the gap between duty use and competitive target shooting. Chambered in .38 Special and fitted with a 4-inch barrel, this early First Issue example retains the classic lines and hand-fitted craftsmanship that made Colt double-action revolvers legendary. Its rich Royal Blue finish and checkered walnut target stocks give it timeless appeal.
The Trooper shares much of its mechanical pedigree with Colt's Officer's Model series, delivering exceptional accuracy and an exceptionally smooth trigger pull. The fully adjustable rear sight and ramp front sight allow precise zeroing for target work or field use. Colt's traditional V-spring lockwork provides one of the smoothest double-action pulls ever offered in a production revolver.
The square butt grip frame fills the hand well, while the oversized walnut target stocks provide excellent recoil control and consistent indexing. A wide target trigger enhances shooter control in both single- and double-action fire. The balance of the 4-inch barrel makes this revolver equally comfortable on the range or carried in a quality belt holster.
The .38 Special remains one of the most respected revolver cartridges ever developed thanks to its mild recoil, inherent accuracy, and broad ammunition availability. Combined with Colt's precise barrel and cylinder alignment, the cartridge delivers excellent practical accuracy. These early Troopers have earned a long-standing reputation for durability and dependable performance.
Collectors continue to seek First Issue Troopers because they represent the final era of Colt's classic hand-fitted double-action revolvers before later redesigns. This 1954 example displays the desirable early production configuration with original style sights, unshrouded ejector rod, and factory walnut target grips. Whether added to a Colt collection or enjoyed on the range, it remains one of the finest classic American revolvers of the postwar era.
