#4885 Colt 1851 Navy, very early 3rd Variation
Description: #4885 Colt 1851 Navy, very early 3rd Variation and thus having the small oval trigger guard, 15XXX serial range c,1853 manufacture, matching numbers including the wedge. Fine crisp action, decent but typical black-powder bore with some darkening in the grooves, some very minor pitting, and having good unbroken rifling; overall about a 7 on a scale of 10 and should clean still better. Smooth unpitted matte’ blue metal with some thin brown patina mixed in on the barrel and cylinder (at least 90% coverage and 70% density) no pitting and fine markings. The cylinder scene is about 90% but shows rather light in depth in tese phots, but better when viewed in hand. The safety pins are at least 60% intact. The COLTS PATENT frame marking is the correct small font lettering as are the serial numbers, and the frame has good traces of darkened casehardening still visable. The grips are VG+ with just one small toe chip to LS grip. Overall, this third year production Navy has a VERY good “curb appeal” and these early Navy Colts were the pride of the fortunate gold seekers in the 1850s California Gold Rush. Now, all that said, I do have some suspicions that this fine revolver is as “pure as the driven snow”, because it is almost TOO good!! There is the possibility that it could be a very early refinish maybe as far back as the early 1900s, but it does show genuine age, so if it was refinished, it was probably a long, LONG time ago. A really great looking Navy ….and not in the five figure price range. About Fine-Fine+ $3195 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
