1851 COLT NAVY MILITARY MARKED 36cal REVOLVER – VERY NICE
Description: The most popular sidearm for both civilian and military use, here is an exceptional condition model 1851 Colt Navy 36 caliber revolver. This one, according to the grip marking, served with the 7th regiment, G company of the U.S. Military. This one is clearly marked with a “7” over “G” on the left side of the walnut grips. Research indicates the 7th and G company served during the late 1860's and into the early 1870's in both Florida, and the Dakota Territory, during the Indian Wars of the 19th century. This particular 1851 Colt Navy was produced by Colt according to the serial number, 200648, in 1867. Attempts to get it lettered by Colt Manufacturing has proven impossible since Colt has no records for the years/era when this was made. The following is noted about this revolver. First, all numbers, including the wedge match and are clearly marked. The 7-1/2 inch barrel is clearly marked, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA” on the top of the octagon barrel. Barrel is in great condition with some pitting, and there is still bluing remaining on the underside of the barrel. Nice brass blade front sight, rifling is in good condition with pitting...expected of a black powder firearm of this era. The cylinder is in very good condition with clean chambers, decent nipples, and the NAVAL ENGAGEMENT ENGRAVED SCENE is still present and discernible. The frame has faint remnants of case color present, and is marked: COLTS PATENT. The brass back strap and trigger guard is in fine condition and marked 36 CAL and serial numbers match the gun as does the barrel wedge. Hammer is in very good condition. Walnut grips, while having shrunk a little over the last 153 years are in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks excepting a small sliver of wood missing from the edge of the right grip near the back strap, and is tight fitting to the gun. The action itself is tight and the cylinder locks up tight and indexes correctly, and indeed this exceptional antique firearm is in shoot-able condition. I have fired it, using 15-16 grains of FFFG, felt wad over powder, with a round ball, and bore-butter sealing the chamber mouth. It fired smoothly and accurately. No fear shooting this on occasion if one has a penchant for shooting a piece of true history. This is a fine antique collectible and certainly will be a marvelous addition to any Colt collection. Reasonable offers will be considered. Sales/shipping to addresses in the United States only. Shipping cost: $30.00. No FFL required to purchase since it is classified as an antique, however can not be shipped to states where prohibited except to an FFL in those states.
