Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Desirable Civil War M1860 Colt Fluted Army "Cavalry" Model Percussion Revolver with Factory Letter, .44 Cal, mfg. 1861 with 7 1/2" barrel. These early production fluted Army revolvers, or "Cavalry" Models as Colt called them due to their lightweight design, are among the most sought after and prized Colt pistols of the American Civil War. Only about 4,000 were manufactured with half being shipped to Southern destinations just prior to and during the outbreak of war. Because of this the fluted Army is recognized as a secondary Confederate arm. This example was not shipped South but does have an interesting history. It was part of a 50 gun shipment in April 1861 to P. S. Newton in Hartford, Connecticut. Newton operated a gun shop right down the road from Colt's factory where he both manufactured and retailed arms. As far as my research shows this was the only shipment of fluted Armys he received and given the date of shipment it is very possible that a soldier going off to war would have bought the gun. It should also be noted that this gun was ordered with the scarce 7 1/2" barrel as opposed to the 8" length which became standard throughout the remainder of production. The pistol remains in very nice original condition with matching serial numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, backstrap, triggerguard, cylinder pin, and wedge. The numbers on the cylinder are stamped on the rear face and are very faint but legible. The metal has an even plum/blue patina throughout with light marring around the wedge and edges of the cylinder. The brass triggerguard shows a pleasing mellowed color. The original wood grips fit perfectly and have a smooth worn finish with slight rounding to the corners and the initials "JS" period carved into the butt. Correct four-screw frame with notch in the butt for mounting a shoulder stock. Original hammer, trigger, loading lever, and brass blade front sight. Some of the screws have been marred but most of not all appear original. Clear original serial numbers, "COLTS PATENT" frame marking, barrel address, and cylinder patent date. The action is strong and crisp and functions nicely. All nipples are clean originals. Very good bore with clean sharp rifling front to back and moderately scattered fine blackpowder frosting. Included is a Colt factory letter confirming the gun's configuration and shipment, a $300 value. Fluted Army revolvers are very difficult to acquire and are a crucial addition to any Civil War arms collection. A rare and fine example!
