Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Cased & Factory Engraved Gustave Young Era Colt Model 1849 Percussion Pocket Revolver with Accessories, made in Hartford, Connecticut. Manufactured in 1852 while Gustave Young's shop was Colt's main contractor for engraving. It features the classic Gustave Young type fine floral scroll engraving with beaded backgrounds and foliate accents popularized by Young and other German trained engravers working for Colt in the 1850s and 1860s. Young ranks among the most well-known nineteenth-century engravers of American firearms and is today most recognized for his work with Colt. He immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1852, engraving for Colt from 1852 to 1858. He became a naturalized citizen in 1858. After a hiatus in Germany, he rejoined Colt somewhere around 1860. Young also engraved for the New Haven Arms Company, Smith & Wesson, as well as other arms makers.

The Model 1849 Pocket, the replacement for the Baby Dragoon, was the most widely produced of any Colt percussion pistol. Nearly 340,000 were manufactured during its 23-year production run that ended in 1873. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw a lot of use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing aspects of this pistol is its cylinder scene. Cylinder scenes during this period were common, especially for Colt, not only for their visual appeal, but because it made a revolver more difficult to forge. The scene on the 1849 Pocket is that of a stagecoach robbery. The focal point is the stagecoach drawn by four horses. A woman in a dress is seen framed in the doorway of the side of the coach. The driver is standing alongside wielding his pistol against multiple assailants as the horses rear and struggle against their harnesses. Several of the bandits lay dying on the ground, one tries to control the horses, two are running away and one is in the process of falling dead after being shot. Not a bad way to show interested buyers what a pistol like this would be good for. It did a fine job as a self-defense handgun for the average citizen in 19th Century America.

This revolver features the classic Gustave Young type fine floral scroll engraving with beaded backgrounds and animal mask and foliate accents popularized by Young and other German trained engravers working for Colt in the 1850s and 1860s. The “COLTS/PATENT” marking is inscribed among the scrollwork on the left rather than the usual stamped marking, with a standard two-line New York barrel address. There are matching visible serial numbers marked on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and butt, with matching “4601” on the loading lever. The factory dot marking designating the revolver for engraving and/or special finishing is marked above or below three of the main serial numbers. The back strap has a blank inscription section. Also included is a hardwood case with felt lined fitted interior containing a double sided eagle powder flask, two cavity bullet mold marked “COLTS/PATENT” on the sprue cutter, Eley London cap tin, lead balls, and a key. 

The overall condition is good. Original gray patina. Some original silver is present on the trigger guard and backstrap. The action is strong. The bore is semi-bright, slightly dimming at the muzzle with nice rifling. Markings are legible. Numbers match, except the replacement wedge is un-numbered. The cylinder is re-numbered. Solid grip, contains average wear. The engravings are sharp. Factory dot marked. The case and accessories are good.

This is a very attractive revolver with early style Germanic scroll engraving possibly by the master, Gustave Young.
