Colt 1849 Pocket Percussion .31 - FACTORY ORIGINAL, FACTORY CASE WITH ACCESSORIES, PRE CIVIL WAR, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1860, .31, 24.9oz
Serial Number: 164757
The 1849 pocket revolver was the successor to the Baby Dragoon and it was to become Colts most popular percussion revolver with about 325,000 produced between 1850-1873. This revolver was made in 1860 and as such predates the American Civil War when all handguns were in great demand.
This Colt 1849 pocket revolver, manufactured in 1860, is configured with a 4" barrel chambered for .31 caliber ball. The top barrel flat is inscribed "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY" and the left side of frame is engraved "COLTS PATENT". All serial numbers are matching including rammer, wedge, cylinder, frame and grip. The trigger guard is silver plated brass, as is the backstrap which holds a smooth one piece Walnut grip and it has a brass pin front sight.
The condition of this Model 1849 is extremely fine with all matching except grip which is unnumbered. Barrel retains about 85% glossy original factory blue, rammer pivot and handle exhibit excellent case hardening. Frame, recoil shields and hammer retain vivid case colors with a slight graying at the bottom edges of the frame. There are a few areas of very fine pitting and a few dings near the barrel wedge on the righthand side, while the cylinder retains about 65% original factory blue and shows a clear and sharp stagecoach holdup scene roll marking. All five safety pins are crisp and serviceable while the bore has excellent sharp rifling with some fine pits are evident. The trigger guard and backstrap retain about 50% all of their original silver plating showing some wear and tarnish in others mostly at the heel and front strap. Colt's fire blued trigger is still vivid with very light edge wear and all screw heads are in excellent shape. The one piece Walnut grip retains most of its varnish with a few spots worn to a matte finish. Mechanically the gun is perfect with a well timed cylinder and a strong main spring while the trigger breaks cleanly at 3.3lb.
This Colt Model 1849 still has its original mahogany presentation box. Velvet lined with partitions, the box includes an early issue powder flask with a standing eagle on both sides, a brass charger and steel spring, Colts bullet casting tool marked "COLT'S PATENT," which is of the steel variety and casts a ball and conical bullet simultaneously, and Colts L-shape screw driver and nipple wrench (unmarked) with blued finish. A partial tin of J. Goldmarks Percussion Caps and an unopened package containing six of COLT'S Combustible Cartridges. A few loose bullets both ball and conical complete this Colt 1849 display.
A Civil War period Colt in overall very fine condition with its original presentation box and a great addition for any collection, thank you for looking. Enjoy.
