Colt 1851 Navy - Fourth Model .36 caliber percussion revolver. 6 shot, 7.5 inch octagonal barrel, color case hardened frame, loading lever and hammer, blue finish on the barrel and cylinder. Large round brass trigger guard. One-piece varnished walnut grips. The cylinder is roll engraved with a scene of the victory of the Republic of Texas Navy against the Mexican Navy at the Battle of Campeche on May 16, 1843. Texas had declared its independence in 1836, but by 1843, Mexico had refused to recognize it. The naval theme on the cylinder of this gun was an expression of gratitude from Colt to Commodore Moore who, in 1837, had purchased Colt Paterson Revolvers for the Republic of Texas Navy. The engraving was provided by Waterman Ormsby. Despite the "Navy" designation, the revolver was chiefly purchased by civilians and military land forces. Serial number = 100,197. Serial number range for the fourth model = 85,001 - 215,000. Manufactured between 1850 and 1873. This gun was made in 1861. Serial numbers match on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, butt, cylinder, loading lever, and arbor. The wedge has no serial number.
