Colt 1855 Sidehammer Root Model, Type 5A, Scarce Full Silver Plate, Made 1862
Description: Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Root 31 caliber percussion revolver, type 5A with 4 1/2" round barrel, 5-shot cylinder, Navy type lever catch, one-piece walnut grips, SCARCE full silver plating that is definitely factory. Serial number 5628 puts manufacture in 1862 so Civil War period and possibly an officer's or NCO's backup. Retains 95% of the original silver plating with some tarnishing in the protected areas. Trigger (spur type) retains much of the original bright fire blue. Loading lever functions fine. Bore is very good. Walnut grip has a repair at back right bottom and are slightly undersized due to refinishing after the repair. Multiple nicks and dings appear on the grips and the top of the back strap. The serial number, "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1850" in the cylinder flute, and "ADDRESS COL. COLT NEW-YORK U.S.A." (in two lines) on the top of the barrel are all clear with slight wear, yet never remarked. There are a couple of spots of pitting starting to form on top of the barrel and the left recoil shield. The half cock notch works fine. The cylinder only cycles on two of the five cylinders - seems like the cylinder pin is slightly bent, thus backing out a bit on the other three cylinders. The hand is present and intact. The cylinder locking bushing and nut are as tight as they can be so some internal adjustment is necessary to get it full functioning. All 5 nipples are present and original to the revolver. Approximately only 14,000 pieces of this model were manufactured, so a special order variation is doubly hard to find. All said, this grades NRA Antique Very Good and is a scarce variation to add to your collection despite the action not working properly. SHIPPING: Shipping to the Continental US States will be a flat $25, with insurance optional and additional if requested. We are registered with the CA DOJ and will ship to California!
