Colt 3rd Model Dragoon U.S. Marked Consecutive Set- Martially Marked with Shoulder Stock and Case
Description: For sale are two martially marked third-model Colt Dragoons with shoulder stock. These Dragoons are consecutively numbered and come with one of the more desirable cases I have ever laid my eyes upon in many years of collecting. To top it off, the accessories that come with the case are stunning. These pistols fall into the correct 17,000 serial number range to be martially marked with shoulder stock, two-leaf rear sight, and four screw frames. Research has found several previous sales of martially marked Dragoons all falling into the 17,000 number range which dates these pistols to 1858. The Case The case of this fabulous set is simply breathtaking. It is 18-inches deep, 20-inches wide, and 8-inches tall. Two heavy-duty brass handles flank each side of the case, allowing one to carry it. The case has a very old and very mysterious brass nameplate attached to the top with the initials; "M.F.F". I can only assume that this is the initials of the gentleman to whom the case belonged too. The case has two chambers; a top area, which is accessed via opening the lid. This top area has seven compartments that house the two consecutive Dragoons, the shoulder stock, an extra barrel, two extra cylinders and a US Army percussion cap tin. The green felt is in absolutely wonderful shape for its age. Opening the lid reveals smells of gun oil and old tobacco (sweet). The lower drawer of the case houses all the accouterments. *It is important to note that the lower drawer, can not be "UNLOCKED" without first opening the lid. Opening the lid then releases an internal lock, which allows the drawer to pull out freely. Otherwise, the drawer remains locked in place so as not to come out. I have to admit, it was a bit of a puzzle to figure this out, and adds to the uniqueness of this case. It is simply stunning that a 170-year-old wooden box could house an internal locking mechanism. The lower drawer pulls out to reveal 17 different compartments filled with: two powder flasks, two bullet molds, two nipple wrenches, five cap tins, lead balls, loaded paper cartridges, a portable cap tin, four tools with wooden handles and brass brushes. Accessories The accessories are numerous and stunning. In no particular order there is a United States Army Percussion cap tin in the top chamber, then starting from bottom to top in the bottom drawer there are two proper Colt Dragoon Powder flasks, both with Colts Patent on them, a full box of loaded paper cartridges, a union metallic percussion cap tin, a brass inline capper, brass brushes, two nipple wrenches, two bullet molds, both stamped colts patent. There are four tools with wooden handles, a screwdriver, a nipple wrench driver, a rod for brushes and a rod for patches. There are four Eley Bros cap tins and two large compartments with lead balls. In our assessment, the eley bros cap tins are modern reproductions as well as the in-line capper and the brass brushes. Everything else is 100% first-generation authentic. Pistols The two pistols are consecutively serial numbered 17121 and 17122. With each pistol, there is an extra cylinder one numbered 17121 and one 17122. There is also an additional barrel that bears both serial numbers stamped on it. The stock is also serial numbered to both pistols and fits on both pistols perfectly. There is a random number; 2194 stamped on the shoulder stock, which doesn't match anything. The bore on the extra barrel is average to good with frosting and light pitting as expected with age. The walnut grips are both shrunken and or sanded down and revarnished; no sign of a cartouche which leads me to believe they have been sanded. They are rounded at all edges commensurate with use. The action on SN 17121 is decent. The main spring has been replaced on both pistols. The action on SN 17122 is average at best. It half cocks and indexes fine, but it does need some help along. It is almost as if the internals are somewhat rusted. But it does function and will lock up tight when fully cocked. All serial numbers match on barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and cylinder. No serial number on the wedge. Our assessment of these pistols is that they are a mix of reproduction parts and original parts. Some items like the cylinders are replacements. Some areas have been restamped or stamped with the incorrect font. These pistols are not 100% original, and as such the price reflects that.
