Colt Model 1849 .31 - INSCRIBED AND PRESENTED TO LT. WILLIAM DICKINSON, CIVIL WAR, GUSTAV YOUNG ENGRAVED, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1855, .31, 26.6oz
Serial Number: 109084
The 1849 pocket revolver was the successor to the Baby Dragoon and was to become Colts most popular percussion revolver with about 325,000 produced between 1850-1873. This revolver, made circa 1855, predates the American Civil War when all handguns where in great demand. Given its exquisite ornamentation by the renown engraver Gustav Young we can easily imagine why this gun was presented to the officer Lt. Dickinson. That this gun remains in such exceptional condition is a testament to the esteem in which it was held. Overall it retains most all of its factory original finishes.
This 1855 manufactured Colt 1849 Pocket revolver is configured with a 5" barrel chambered for .31 caliber ball. It has a brass pin front sight and is engraved 'SAML COLT". Left side of frame is engraved in a ribbon "COLTS PATENT". All serial numbers are matching including rammer, wedge, cylinder, frame and grip. The trigger guard is silver plated brass, as is the backstrap which holds a smooth one piece Ivory grip, and the backstrap channel carries the last three serial digits. Frame and recoil shield have full coverage deluxe engraving by Gustav Young, consisting of intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background and several scrolls terminating in blooming flowers. The engraving extends over the barrel lug and onto the rammer pivot plate. The engraved pattern on the barrel lug faces are part of extra grade of decoration that is denoted by the small dots near each serial number and guns so marked would get special attention from the engraving and finishing rooms. A single scroll on the left hand side finishes in Mr. Young's trademark dogs head. Top side flats of the octagonal barrel are engraved to match, tapering out after the pivot, the barrel crown has a simple border pattern. The upper portion of the back strap has Mr. Young's fan motif with more scrolls down the back strap framing the dedication. The butt strap and trigger guard have matching foliate patterns while the front strap remains clear of engraving. The case hardened hammer has Mr. Young's famous wolf head motif. All screw heads and pins are engraved with star bursts. The five shot cylinder has a stagecoach holdup scene roll marking with "COLTS PATENT" and matching serial number. The back strap is inscribed in very fine period script “Lieut. Wm. Dickinson / from W.O. Irish & T.W. Perkins”. William Dickinson enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant on Feb. 21, 1857 in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment and retired Oct. 3, 1863. He was listed as POW, date & place not indicated, and was exchanged Dec. 31, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant May 1861, breveted major after Bull Run, July 21, 1861 and made permanent Captain on July 31, 1861. Records indicate that he was born in Connecticut and died August of 1887. While definitive information is lacking, Lt. Dickinson may have been in Company “D”, 3rd Regular Infantry.
The condition of this Model 1849 is extremely fine, all matching except the grip which is unnumbered. Barrel retains about 90% glossy original factory blue with some light thinning on the left side flat toward the muzzle. Rammer pivot retains traces of faded case hardening while the rammer handle has been burnished to a warm gray. Frame and hammer retain strong case colors turned dark and the cylinder retains about 40% original factory blue and shows a clear and sharp stagecoach holdup scene roll marking. All five safety pins are crisp and serviceable and the bore is bright with sharp rifling while a few fine pits are evident. The trigger guard and backstrap retain virtually all of their original silver plating showing some wear, mostly at the heel. The factory fitted elephant ivory one piece grip has an age crack on the right side and a few age lines along the bottom edges, but it retains a wonderful, mellow ivory patina. Mechanically the gun is perfect with a well timed cylinder and three audible clicks against the strong main spring on cocking and the trigger breaks at 2.3lb.
An incredible Civil War sidearm with a real history, this is a rare chance to become the next guardian of this Historical Colt Model 1849.
