COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER IN CALIBER 44

Description:
This 1861-made revolver shows a lot of character. 8 inch barrel with a fair bore showing generally strong rifling throughout. Metal surfaces are mostly a gunmetal gray with areas of lightly cleaned pinprick pitting. The cylinder scene is worn away but retains a legible patent marking. The “COLTS PATENT” on left side of the frame is strong. The frame is cut for a shoulder stock. The walnut grips are quite shy and worn smooth in spots. They have a punch dot design on the left and a floral pattern on the right. The butt screw has broken off in the threads and is missing the screw head. The front sight blade has been modified with a small vacant dovetail cut into the blade. The mainspring is a bit weak and the hammer notches may have been recut at some point but the action is otherwise functional. The copy of the Factory Letter indicates the revolver shipped on December 25, 1861 in a 100-gun shipment to J.C. Grubb & Company of Philadelphia.

Founded by Quaker businessman Joseph C. Grubb in 1839, the company operated out of a well-known storefront at 712 Market Street. During the Civil War, J.C. Grubb & Co. became highly successful by supplying large quantities of arms to the local Home Guard.
