Japanese Inscribed CIVIL WAR-era COLT 1851 NAVY
Description: Japanese Inscribed CIVIL WAR-era COLT 1851 NAVY Made During the Civil War 1863 w Japanese Characters Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, made in 1863, in Hartford, Connecticut. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides. There were some military purchases and lots of private purchases by soldiers going off to war. In addition, the Model 1851 was a favorite of “Wild Bill” Hickok, who carried two of these most famously in his red sash. This specimen is very interesting. It features Japanese characters inscribed on each side of the grip. Back in 1853, the U.S. began relations with Japan as Commodore Matthew C. Perry was ordered by President Millard Fillmore to take naval ships to the capital city of Edo. This marked the beginning of enormous change in Japan, including modernization and Westernization. In 1860, Japan sent a Japanese Embassy to the United States, just on the cusp of the American Civil War. One wonders who owned this revolver and where it has been. Perhaps someone familiar with this language can shed light on its history. The revolver shows both a high degree of care, and also much use. For instance, the cylinder scene has been worn smooth, other markings like the barrel address are faded (one line New York address), and the bore shows no more rifling. Yet, the barrel still fits tight to the frame, and the original wedge was retained. All serial numbers match. The blue is a very old refinish. This is clearly a gun that was prized and still utilized. This specimen is in very good condition. Bluing is from a very old refinish, with about 50% remaining. The markings are legible, with some fading. Serial numbers match, including the grips. The original walnut grips are in near fine condition with Japanese characters inscribed on both sides. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches in length. Caliber: .36 percussion The bore is in very good condition, and the firing mechanism is functional. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a very nice Civil War production Colt 1851 Navy Revolver for your collection. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
