NICE Antique Post-CIVIL WAR COLT M1855 ROOT Sidehammer .31 POCKET Revolver
PERCUSSION Side-hammer Revolver Made in 1867
Description: NICE Antique Post-CIVIL WAR COLT M1855 ROOT Sidehammer .31 POCKET Revolver PERCUSSION Side-hammer Revolver Made in 1867 Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 “Root” Side-hammer Percussion Pocket Revolver, made in 1867 in Hartford, Connecticut. This Samuel Colt design was named after his factory superintendent, Elisha K. Root, and exemplifies Colt’s strong drive to innovate—arguably the key to his success. Although the Colt 1849 Pocket had been introduced just six years earlier, Colt sought to improve upon the pocket revolver with this new model. The Root featured several notable innovations, including Colt’s first use of the “creeping” loading lever, which provided better mechanical advantage during loading. It also introduced Colt’s first solid frame, a right-side mounted hammer for easier access to the cylinder axis pin, and a cylinder axis pin that served as the pivot point for turning the cylinder—rather than the cylinder itself. Many of these ideas were experimental at the time, and some would later prove valuable for future designs. However, the small parts in the Root Revolver’s mechanism were quite delicate, which led to durability issues. Scaling up the design in the 1855 series of Revolving Rifles and Shotguns helped address these problems. Colt even experimented with adapting the Root design to a Dragoon pistol, a precursor to the 1860 Army revolver. The overall condition is fine. Excellent action. Much original blue is present. The bore retains a slight shimmer with serviceable rifling. The grip is fine with most of its original varnish intact showing little handling wear. Markings are sharp. The cylinder scene is discernable. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/2 inches. Caliber: .31 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos.
