Nice Early Colt Model 1851 Navy Squareback Revolver in Untouched Attic Fresh Condition
Description: SALE PENDING! This is a fantastic early Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver in 36 Caliber with the rare Squareback trigger guard. Serial number is in the 3600 range and was made in 1851 during the time of the California Gold Rush. Many of these early Navy pistols saw use in the early American West, Civil War, and the Post Civil War American West. This one has the standard wedge screw which makes it a 2nd Model. You'll have a tough time finding on more undisturbed than this. The numbers are matching on the frame, barrel, cylinder, trigger guard, backstrap, arbor pin, and loading lever. The only non-matching number is the wedge which looking at the font came from an early 1851 Navy...perhaps the original owner had a pair of these. As for condition, it's in NRA Antique Very Good+ Condition with great cylinder scene. Look at the back of the cylinder on the lugs and you'll see that 5 of the 6 fragile safety pins are still standing. Cylinder scene is great depicting a Naval battle. The frame still has some silvery remains of the original case colors while the blue on the barrel and cylinder have turned to a nice smooth patina long ago. The brass trigger guard still has an astounding amount of original silver plating, about 85%. Backstrap has about 50% silver with a great mustard brass patina mixing through. Sam Colt did not cut corners on the silver plating back in the 1850s nor did he on the varnish he used on his grips. I've heard he used a violin grade varnish with ground amber dust or a type called turpene but either way, it is remarkably durable and has stood the test of time. At 170+ years old, it still has 93% remaining. Grips are solid with no cracks, repairs, or cleaning. There are some tiny chips off the edges of the front strap which is very common but FINE condition overall. Nice sharp New York Barrel Address and COLT'S PATENT on left side of the frame. Good screws throughout. Action is working nicely and still sounds like a Colt. Barrel to frame is tight with no play. Original cone front sight. One of the nicest 51 Squarebacks we've come across in many years. Antique, Pre-1898 Percussion. No FFL Required under Federal Law. Buyer must be 21 years of age. We cannot ship this to NJ, DC, Chicago. Sorry, No International Sales. 30.00 shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1851 Navy Squareback |
