Rare Full Martial Colt 1861 Navy Civil War Revolver Made Early 1862 4 Digit Serial Number
Description: Consignment item, one of many from a large collection of 1850s and 1860s percussion firearms. Please see my other listings for more items. Colt Model 1861 Navy with 6-shot cylinder in caliber 36 percussion of course, as all Navy models were. Serial number 6401 was made early in 1862 as the Civil War was heating up. This a rare example having various sub-inspector initials on the cylinder, trigger guard, back strap, and barrel at breech. About half of the "OWA" Oliver Ainsworth (who also inspected many early Colt Single Action Army 45 Caliber Cavalry Revolvers) is seen at the bottom of the left grip. Although not a direct hit with the Springfield Research Survey, this revolver falls in a range of 1861 Navies that were issued to the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, and thus, most likely saw action at Forts Henry and Donelson as well as Shiloh and Vicksburg during the Civil War. Very solid example that retains 5% case colors on the frame and hammer with the balance a smooth patina. Grips are solid and with most of the clear varnish remaining. Cylinder retains 10% of the Naval Engagement scene, with the patent and serial number clear. Bore is good. Action is crisp with positive clicks and indexes perfectly every time, locks up solidly with a very strong spring. There is a hint of play at the barrel/frame junction, very minor but still needs to be mentioned. No silver plate remains on the brass parts, which have turned a mild ochre color. All locations have the matching serial number except the wedge, which is from another revolver close in serial number. Sharp U. S. America address on the barrel. Some light pitting in spots of the metal as expected with a firearm of this vintage. Grades NRA Antique Very Good and is a highly-desirable Colt 1861 variation. TERMS: No international sales and no sales to Alaska or Hawaii. Sales to California and New York will only be shipped to an FFL dealer. All others require a valid driver's license or other proof of adult age and will ship directly to your residence or workplace. Buyer pays $35 for shipping and tracking by USPS Priority Mail. All major credit cards are accepted but incur a 4% convenience surcharge; payment by personal check, bank check or USPS money order. 3-day, non-firing inspection with buyer responsible for return shipping.
