US Martial Purchased Colt 1860 Army Revolver .44 Caliber, High Condition with Factory Letter and All Matching Numbers
Description: Very Strong Example of an early Civil War Issued Colt 1860 Army .44 Caliber Percussion Revolver. Lots of original blue, case colors, and comes with a Colt Factory Letter stating it was shipped to Major Whitely at the New York Arsenal in March 1862. It has all matching numbers including the wedge and until just recently, was in a collection for the past 30 years. Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Fine Plus with 75% original case colors on the frame, hammer, and loading lever. The barrel has 50% original blue which is pretty strong in the flutes, lug area, and really strong around the loading lever and the first 3 or 4 inches coming back from the muzzle. The top and middle portion of the barrel has mostly thinned out to a nice light grey patina which is probably from holster wear. The cylinder has 95% of its roll engraved scene...mostly grey with a little bit of faded blue in the rebate. The back of the cylinder still has all 6 safety pins intact on the lugs. Steel backstrap still shows 70% original blue overall...very strong on the hump and the lower strap and more thinnig along the back of the grips. Many of the screws still show much of their original fire blue as well as the profiles of the trigger. The grips are Excellent...some of the nicest grips I've seen on a Civil War Issued 1860 Army in a long long time. They fit the frame and straps perfect with no chips, no cracks, no repairs, and best of all, the butt wasn't used as a hammer...you can even see the "L" sub-inspector on the bottom. The gov't cartouche inspector cartouche was stamped pretty light and washed out (no longer crisp) but it's there. The mechanics are nice and tight, barrel to frame is tight, bore is Very Good with with strong rifling, fairly bright with a few light scattered pits. No rings, no bulges. There a lot of 1860's out there that saw hard use in the Civil War...especially in the hands of Union Cavalrymen. Most are pretty worn and I will see hundreds of them before I come across one like this with so much of its original Colt wartime finish intact, especially one built and shipped in the first year of the Civil War. It must have landed in an Officer's holster because it damn sure didn't ride around on a galloping horse like so many of them did. A little more finish and this would be double the price. If you're looking for a good one that saw a little action in the War but still shows a lot of original finish, this one is in that sweet spot that you rarely find. Antique, Pre-1898. No FFL Required. This cannot be shipped to NYC, NJ, Chicago, or DC. Sorry, no international sales. Shipping costs will be based on zip code and specifications by the customer.
