#4948 Colt S/A, 5-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S. Artillery” 55XXX range (1880)
Description: #4948 Colt S/A, 5-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S. Artillery” 55XXX range (1880) frame number, remaining are correctly mismatched serial numbers. This old military issued revolver has been totally refinished in bright nickel, probably done for some non-collector who probably thought this was just aanother mismatched low value Colt, and would make a good shooter. It does have a Fine+ bore, about a 8+ on a scale of 10 with just light wear, but no bad spots and a fine tight smooth action with all the clicks on the hammer and crisp lock-up. The smooth metal is very nice with no pitting at all. For a buffed and refinished handgun, most of the markings are still quite readable (see photos), the worst being that the middle and last frame numbers are too faint to read. Flashy simulated two-piece pearl grips, which are, of course, modern replacements and show virtually no wear at all and do fit very well. Overall this 137 year old Colt is now more of a decent and “showy” holster filler and handsome representative Colt S/A than it is a highly collectable U.S. martial handgun. However, it still is a surviving veteran of the late 1890s Philippine Insurrection and still worthy of that historic distinction and it is a revolver that is getting ever more difficult to find at a price anywhere near this low, especially when one considers that a new 3rd Gen Single Action costs over $2000, these historic antiques are a GREAT buy! For what it is, it is VG++ $1965 SOLD Antique: Yes |
