Colt S/A, 4-3/4”x44WCF, 145XXX serial range (1892 mfgr)
Description: #4949 Colt S/A, 4-3/4”x44WCF, 145XXX serial range (1892 mfgr), good tight action with all “clicks” on the hammer, and about a “5-6” bore as rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. It shows a LOT of ear to the lands and some lead build-up in the grooves, but no pits of significance just the normal black powder light piting. This configuration and caliber is one of the most popular of all the Single Actions and was somewhat immortalized in the 1960s by the late Marty Robbins in his memorable song, “Mister Shorty” youtube/watch?v=L0bcALLEgwI? about a “short-barreled bad forty-four” and the small cowboy who was packing it. This particular gun looks just like what was portrayed in that song, since it has well worn Eagle grips from the many years of having been carried and used, but yet the mechanics are very good and markings are still mostly decent. The famed roll-die “CFSS” barrel logo is somewhat worn from many, many years holstering, however the correct two-line address is still decent as are the other markings. Overall just a thin dark grayish patina with the usual scattered light freckles of minor pitting, bumps, and dings of a well used but not abused 129 year life. There are lots of pictures (about 18) of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. All-in-all, it is a very handsome little Thumb-Buster that looks to have had a LOT of rounds put through it by some cowboy or perhaps a law man in the late 1800s, but it was well cared for. VG/VG+ overall as described. $3295 SOLD Antique: Yes |
