#4965 Colt S/A 4-3/4”x38WCF, 176XXX(1898), average bore (about a 6-7 on a scale of 10) and basically a VG action although it can be “rocked” off the cylinder stops so it could benefit from a new cylinder bolt and/or spring. The grayish metal shows some significant wear and is very lightly pitted over most of the surface. The markings are getting pretty weak as well, although the correct two-line barrel address is dimly visible. The standard original grips have no chips, but are worn almost smooth, and it is VERY obvious that this was a heavily used Colt. Now, there is NOTHING to suggest that this Colt was ever a Texas Rangers gun except for the fact that between the late 1880s and the early 1900s, the most favored handgun of the Texas Rangers was the 4-3/4” length Colt and in the 38WCF caliber. Fast on the draw, reliable in use, and shooting a lighter weight bullet with the same powder charge as the 44/40, it was more accurate than the 44. But while there is no provenace as to the owner(s), whoever owned this little Colt, he USED it! $2295
