#4976 Colt S/A 5”x44WCF, 57XXX(1880), original ivory grips and period shortened barrel with a VG bore (6-7 on a scale of 10), indexes well and the action is tight and locks up firmly. The exterior has that real “cowboy charisma” look with some slight roughness, like a piece of medium grit sandpaper and a very even greyish patina with some FAINT traces of original factory nickel scattered here and there. No pits of consequence, decent markings, and matching numbers. The one-piece ivory grips fit very well and have deep age cracking and some wear due to heavy use. (These well-aged old ivory grips are easily worth $7-800 just by themselves.) The hammer is the correct style with the border and some very faint traces of original nickel exist, so no doubt has been with this old Thumb Buster its entire lifetime. The ejector head is a frontier homemade replacement and looks to be almost as old as the gun. Overall, just a decent “Cattle Wars” era Single Action that has seen many years riding a fence-line on some cowboys hip.
