#4978 Colt S/A 7-1/2x22RF, extremely rare calibered gun (only 107 made as original 22RFs!!)
Description: #4978 Colt S/A 7-1/2x22RF, extremely rare calibered gun (only 107 made as original 22RFs!!) numbered in its own serial range, 17XX (1887) and being all matching serial numbers including the barrel and the cylinder. Fine tight action and a bore that looks like it’s perhaps a 8 to 8-1/2 on a scale of 10. It has deep strong rifling with no pitting of consequence, but also some minor surface lead crustiness. Crisp, tight action, fine smooth metal on the exterior with VG markings and a thin dark bluish-grey color which possibly is some left-over remnants of a well-done old Cold Blue job. Decent plain hard rubber grips with 40% wear to the checking and fit very well. Now, suffice to say that since many, if most Single Actions have been restored, enhanced, and juiced-up to some degree …especially the very rare and the militaries …one should take this possibility into consideration (and this gun has been valued with that possiblity in mind). However, I have read the Kopec book on the S/As, and this gun adheres to the later style of 22RF production in every aspect that I can determine. It has the correct frame and barrel markings, the correct trigger guard caliber marks, the correct grips, the correct hammer knurling, correct “C” inspector mark in the correct hammer slot, correct hammer firing pin, and the full-length barrel and cylinder have NOT been relined, but are original 22caliber parts. There are a lot of photos to this VERY desirable and EXTREMELY RARE revolver, so if they all don’t load (there are about 20 in all), just email me and I will forward them to you by return email. For the Colt S/A collector who wants one of the rarest of all calibers (and one that would also be a very cheap shooter!), here is a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to get a 22RF at a lot less than the $12,000-14,000 that one would be if it had a good and a long provenance. Even if this is a very, VERY good fake (which I doubt) it is not much more $$$ than the same S/A would be in this condition and time period and in a common caliber. VG++ $6450 SOLD Antique: Yes |
