Colt S/A, 7-1/2x45COLT, “U.S. Cavalry” model
Description: #4987 Colt S/A, 7-1/2x45COLT, “U.S. Cavalry” model. This is a VERY desirable second year production (3XXX range-1874) Colt. It is inspected throughout by O.W. Ainsworth, the first S/A military inspector, and thus being a PRE-Custer range Colt and the possibility of having been a 7th Cavalry issue! However, in this case, it is just too good of a condition to have been in the Custer Battle and then having been captured by Indians who used them pretty hard. This old veteran of the 1870-1890s Indian Wars in the American West has very decent metal with just a thin dark brownish appearance and no pitting of any consequence. It is well marked with the A inspector martial markings in all the correct places, and all numbers, except the grip, match. The grips do look to probably be excellent fitting replacements at some point in its life, but are just too good to be 140+ years old, plus they do not have the side cartouches. The metal is very nice, the patina is very attractive, and overall it is certainly WELL above the average condition for a gun of this age. It does have some very minor thin rust in the tight areas, but there is no pitting as previously mentioned, and the overall look is just that of being a very handsome and VERY early military Indian War Era Colt. It has the correct 1st style captive rod ejector housing with the Bulls-Eye ejector head, the correct italic barrel address line, hammer knurling, etc. But suffice to say this, and this is a note to remember on virtually ALL of the extremely desireable Colt S/As. Since many, if not most all 1st Gen Colt Single Actions (…and especially these highly collectible militaries), have probably been enhanced, restored, and/or juiced-up to at least SOME degree during various ownerships, a new buyer should always take this possibility into consideration. Consequently this gun has been valued by me with that possibility in mind. However, this is still a really great and rarely encountered opportunity to own a really nice piece of the Wild West frontier history and one of the fastest value appreciators in the antique gun field. It is getting very, VERY difficult to find any pre-1876 production martial Colt S/A priced at anything much under $8000-$9000 …especially a military issued FOUR-digit one manufactured in the second year of production!!!
